He was orphaned as a young boy when his mother died shortly after his father abandoned the family
Poe was taken in by John and Frances Allan but never formally adopted him
The Allan family had Poe baptized in the Episcopal Church in 1812
John Allan spoiled and aggressively disciplined his foster son
The family sailed to Britain in 1815
Poe attended the grammar school in Scotland
There he studied at a boarding school in Chelsea until summer 1817

In Baltimore in 1935 he got married to Virginia Clemm his 13 year old cousin
In January 1845 Poe published his poem "The Raven" which led him to instant success
His wife died from tuberculosis 2 years after " The Raven" was published
He began planning to produce his own journal, The Penn (later named the Stylus)
He died before it could be produced
In April 1841 , Edgar Allan Poe's "Murder in the Rue Morgue" was in Grahams Magazines
on August 19, 1843 Poe published his short story "The Black Cat" in the Saturday Evening Post.
In 1835, Poe moved back to Richmond and became the editor of the Southern Literary messenger

Poe influenced literature
On October 3, 1849, Poe was found on the streets of Baltimore delirious
he was in need of immediate assistance
taken to the Washington College Hospital
where he died on Sunday, October 7, 1849
Poe was never coherent long enough to explain how he came to be in his condition
Poe was not wearing his own clothes
Some sources say Poe's final words were "Lord help my poor soul"
All medical records, including his death certificate, have been lost.
Newspapers at the time reported Poe's death as "congestion of the brain"
